Construction procurement: delivering at the right time

Good procurement means deliveries whose contents and timing match the site’s needs. Ordering everything at once is not always the right answer.
Create a precise list
For each item: reference or specifications, quantity, intended use and delivery location. An overly general description can result in products that meet different needs.
Align the list with the work schedule
Some supplies are needed at the start, others only at a later stage. Programme changes must be shared with the people organising deliveries.
Prepare the site
Access, unloading areas, handling equipment and storage space: it is better to plan these than discover them when goods arrive.
Check on receipt
Check quantities and references according to the agreed responsibilities, and report discrepancies to the relevant contacts.
Treating procurement as a project stage gives a clearer view of upcoming needs and the decisions required.
